What is CBD oil and is it legal?

Lets see if I can clear the haze on this topic.

Cannabinoids (CBD) are the primary compounds in cannabis. There is something like 113 cannabinoids that have been identified and each with different properties and herbal effects. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most well-known cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, and it is the ONLY psychoactive cannabinoid.

There are actually TWO different types of CBD that I will be talking about.

One is marijuana derived CBD which is illegal according to federal law. The psychoactive chemical is THC and can contain as much as 30%.

The other CBS is derived from hemp and federal law list that as legal. There is less than 0.3% THC.

Yes, both are members of the cannabis family. They share many of the same characteristics. However, hemp has such a low amount of THC it would be impossible to get high off it.

The key word is where CBD was DERIVED from.

From here on I will ONLY be talking about hemp derived CBD.

It is taken from the mature stalks and “oil or cake made from the seeds” of the Cannabis satvia L. plant that hemp derived CBD is made from. This non-psychoactive cannabinoid binds to the receptors in our immune system, thus providing a variety of medicinal benefits.

The boost to your immune system can help the body fight off bad cell that are weakening good cells.

  • Interesting fact: The US Government in 2003 originally patented CBD as a neuroprotectant and antioxidant.
  • And in the last 20 years, a natural cannabinoid receptor system has been discovered in the human body, the endocannabinoid system.

Hemp derived CBD receptors products interact with the CBD receptors which send signals to wake up and strengthen the immune system naturally. It is by binding these receptors that cannabinoids produce their pharmacological effects. Did you know that there are at least two types of cannabinoid receptors in humans: CB1 and CB2 ? CB1 receptors are present in the brain and spinal cord and in certain peripheral tissues, while CB2 receptors are found primarily in the immune system.

In 2015 the NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) published an article that supports Hemp Oil for:

  • Anti-seizure effects
  • Neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects
  • Analgesic (pain reduction) effects for ailments such as rheumatoid arthritis, cancer pain and other neuropathic pain.
  • Anti-anxiety effects
  • Anti-tumor effects
  • Treating substance use disorders.

Be careful who you buy it from and what they are selling you. Anything right now that is marijuana derived  illegal , until the Federal Governments says differently.

I do sell the hemp derived CBD. I purchase it from a company that started in 2011. They have the FIRST and now most experienced licensed compounding pharmacist formulating CBD products in the entire country. They are also third-party independent tested.

I hope I have cleared up the mystery of this “amazing and beneficial” oil in this brief outline. I am happy to go into further detail if any of you have questions. Just contact me.

Next blog on this topic I will go on to talk about the various receptors in our body that this oil binds to. Giving you a better understanding how it can help YOU.
